The Future of the Coffee Sector in the Context of Due Diligence Regulations: Possible Scenarios

The legislative landscape affecting global commodity trade is undergoing rapid changes. This presentation with Dr. Janina Grabs, Associate Professor at ESADE Business School will first give an overview of the range of due diligence regulations that are proposed and already in force in countries around the globe. Second, it provides a deep dive into the EU Deforestation Regulation to outline potential scenarios of implementation and associated consequences for the sector. To do so, it draws both on experiences from the palm oil sector – which has had a 10-year head start in eliminating deforestation from its supply chains – as well as interviews with experts from the coffee sector on their views of current preparatory responses.

In this session Luis Fernando Samper will explore the role of intangibles in coffee. The role of intangibles in the process of value creation and distribution is often overlooked. However, as the new SCA Value assessment form suggests, specific provenance information, which SCA calls “extrinsic attributes” can generate value among procurement professionals as “signals” associated with quality.
