The Future of the Coffee Sector in the Context of Due Diligence Regulations: Possible Scenarios

The legislative landscape affecting global commodity trade is undergoing rapid changes. One major novelty is the emergence of due diligence regulation, which put increasing responsibility on companies to understand, prevent, and combat adverse social and environmental impacts in their value chains.

This presentation with Dr. Janina Grabs, Associate Professor at ESADE Business School will first give an overview of the range of due diligence regulations that are proposed and already in force in countries around the globe. Second, it provides a deep dive into the EU Deforestation Regulation to outline potential scenarios of implementation and associated consequences for the sector. To do so, it draws both on experiences from the palm oil sector–which has had a 10-year head start in eliminating deforestation from its supply chains–as well as interviews with experts from the coffee sector on their views of current preparatory responses.
