Direct Trade Impact Studies | Shauna Alexander
Direct Trade has been Stumptown’s sourcing philosophy for nearly 20 years. During that time, we observed positive impacts of that model at coffee farm and community levels — but also recognized the limits of our own observations. In 2018 Stumptown got serious about measuring the impact of Direct Trade at origin, codifying our approach, and hiring third parties to conduct impact studies.
This presentation will delve into those studies by covering Stumptown’s Direct Trade sourcing principles, the company’s impact indicators, and the results of the independent research that shows positive results for producers and their communities around the world — along with consistently exquisite coffees.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Shauna Alexander is Vice President of Coffee and Sustainability at Stumptown Coffee Roasters. She leads the green coffee sourcing, roasting, quality, and education teams, and directs sustainability strategy for coffee sourcing and overall company operations.
Prior to Stumptown, Shauna led global sustainability initiatives for Volcafe, where she worked collaboratively with the company’s in-country agricultural extension teams in ten countries to create a consistent approach to farmer support services called the “Volcafe Way."
Shauna got her start in coffee researching her master’s thesis on the economics of shade-grown coffee in Costa Rica. She holds degrees from the University of Virginia and Yale University.
